Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of St Catherine’s,
This term has certainly been a roller coaster ride hasn't it! From a staggered start with a combination of face to face and remote learning to a spike in Covid positive cases and most recently the devastating impact of acts of vandalism, we have weathered a lot. Through all of this adversity however, there has been a true sense of community working with and supporting one another. The positive feedback shared from families with staff has been very much appreciated and I would like to add my own appreciation of the way the staff, in partnership with families have gone about their work.
Throughout this term staff have maintained a strong focus on supporting the wellbeing of all students through regular check ins, adjusting learning programs or scaffolding social interactions for those children that require a little extra support in these areas. Parents are encouraged to regularly talk with their child/ren about their time at school and can support by asking questions that are open ended. Examples include:
- What went well for you today?
- Tell me about a time that you were able to help someone today?
- What was a struggle for you today that you were able to work through?
Research tells us that the practice of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness can go a long way in supporting our own wellbeing and developing these practices in our young people is critical. These practices help move us from an egocentric (concern for self) to an allocentric (concern for other) perspective which is vital for healthy community participation.
Some of the highlights we are grateful for this term include the celebration of Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday through our outdoor Masses and Liturgies. It was great to welcome parents and friends back to the school to share in these events. Many of our year 3-6 students were able to participate in both SAPSASA and Catholic Schools swimming carnivals and the SAPSASA athletics carnival. The Year 5 students participated in a Beach Safety excursion and the Year 6 class attended an Aquatics Day at Westlakes. Our choir students have started their preparations for the Catholic Schools Music Festival due to be held at the Adelaide Festival Theatre at the end of Term 3. Our butterfly garden has been established and students have planted a fresh crop of vegetables in the garden beds.
Change in COVID Communication Procedures
Following the introduction of the Catholic Education South Australia Outbreak Management Plan for COVID-19, the following changes have been made regarding communication with families:
- We will no longer send classroom contact notifications to families in response to individual cases being reported to the school.
- Where five or more students are COVID-19 positive in a home class/room, we will recommend to families that students in the class are PCR tested.
It is essential that parents inform the school immediately of a child that tests positive for COVID. Students who are COVID positive must not attend school, and must follow all SA Health advice (isolate at home for 7 days). We will continue to work closely with SA Health and CESA to ensure that all necessary health advice is closely followed. While we recognise that COVID safety measures can be disruptive and inconvenient, it remains vital that we take all necessary precautions to minimise the risk of ongoing transmission within our community.
Towards 2027: Strategy for Catholic Education in South Australia
Earlier this term, the Catholic Education Towards 2027: Expanding Horizons and Deepening Practices Strategy was launched. The strategy provides clear direction for the next five years for Catholic Schools in South Australia and focuses on outcomes across seven key areas:
- Catholic Identity and Mission
- Students
- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
- Learning and Teaching
- People, Leadership and Culture
- Financial Stewardship and Improvement
- Participation in Mission and Purpose
A short video outlining this strategy is available here: https://www.cesa.catholic.edu.au/towards-2027
