Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent
Ash Wednesday begins the forty day season of Lent that leads to Easter. On Ash Wednesday, we came together to acknowledge the times that we have turned about from God and the need to ask for his forgiveness. Our Ash Wednesday service was slightly different this year with students, staff and guests receiving a sprinkling of Ashes on their heads rather than the tradition mark of the cross. Regardless of the change in procedures, we were able to reflect upon how we can have a change of heart and follow Jesus during this Lenten period. Thank you to those who were able to join us for our Ash Wednesday services.
Project Compassion
Thank you to those families who have already been able to make a donation to Project Compassion. Students were very excited to be able to take home their Project Compassion donation box last week and classes have started to explore the work of Project Compassion.
We begin our annual Lenten Project Compassion journey by learning about the story of Jamila and her family. Jamila, 22, is a Rohingya woman, living in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. A single mother, she fled armed conflict in Myanmar to save herself, her elderly mother and eight-month-old baby.
With the support of Caritas Australia, through Caritas Bangladesh, Jamila was able to access emergency food and shelter. She also received counselling, emotional support and learnt sewing skills, to help her earn an income. Jamila now feels less alone, with a sense of community around her. She is able to ‘Be More’ to her little family.
At the moment 860,494 people remain in the densely populated camps, in desperate need of humanitarian assistance, especially due to COVID-19. (UNHCR)
Watch a short film about Jamila’s story here.

Sacramental Program at the Parish Hall
The Sacramental Program has resumed for 2021 with a growing group of students form St Catherine's and surrounding schools. We have welcomed them and their families and enjoyed undertaking the preparations for their upcoming Reconciliation which will be held on Tuesday March 9th at St Matthew's Church. We were able to hold our first workshop for the year in the newly built Hall at St Matthew's Church and will continue to hold our preparation workshops in this beautiful setting.
Garden Produce/Ecology
We have been thrilled to be able to share some of the school grown garden produce with our school community this term. We successfully help our first Garden Market Stall which raised over $45. This money will go towards future garden projects. We look forward to having more of these stalls across the year and hearing about the wonderful things families have cooked with the produce.
Ecology Representative Group
This year each class will have 2 students as Eco Reps each semester. These students will help with Ecology initiatives around the school. This continues to be a priority with our commitment to care for creation as we are inspired by the words of Pope Francis
I would like to congratulate these students on their commitment to this aspect of our school values and very much look forward to working with them this semester. They have already started working hard brainstorming ideas and being proactive in improving the recycling behaviours of our school community. You may like to also adopt the milk bottle plastic recycling initiative by recycling small hard plastics within the clean milk bottle.
