Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of St Catherine’s,
I hope you had a relaxing and safe term break and that you were able to spend some quality time together with your family. It has been fantastic seeing the students return to school and settle quickly into Term 2.
We finished Term 1 on a high note with our annual Sports Day, which was held at the Stirling Oval. We were blessed with beautiful weather and the students looked and sounded fantastic dressed in their house colours, singing their team chants. The day was well attended by parents, relatives and friends who enjoyed cheering the children on throughout the various events of the day. Thank you to our P&F and parent volunteers for putting together the great House Colour packs, Recess Packs and Sausage Sizzle lunch and for coordinating 'From The Butler's Pantry' Coffee Van and 'Hockey Pokey Ice Cream' to be available on the day. Special thanks also to Fr Fred for joining us in the morning as part of our opening ceremony. Congratulations to SIENA on winning the Team Shield and Congratulations to VERITAS for winning the Spirit Shield in 2021!
Changing restrictions
I am pleased to be able to invite parents and relatives to attend our whole school events such as Assemblies and Masses, once again. With SA Health's change in indoor venue density requirements, we can now welcome up to 55 visitors at events held in Siena Hall. It is imperative that visitors to any of our school events register via our school website (https://www.stcaths.catholic.edu.au/community/parent-attendance-registration) as well as check in using the COVID-SAFE CHECK-IN QR code or paper sign-in register when visiting.
Year 5 Camp
Already this term, our year 5 students have been on their class camp to Woodhouse. Perfect conditions made the job of putting up and taking down their tents very manageable. The students spent two days engaged in a variety of activities including Challenge Hill, Tube Slide, Labrynth, Laser Skirmish and Disc Golf. I joined the camp for the evening activities and overnight stay and was very impressed with the genuine care and kindness the students show to one another as well as their commitment to working through the various physical challenges of the camp. Thank you to Corey Lewis, Krystina Dawe and Mel van der Linden for planning and facilitating this wonderful opportunity for our students.
Lunch Clubs
This term, we have three lunchtime clubs on offer for interested students.
Monday: Coding
Tuesday and Thursday: Gardening
Wednesday: Glee
Aboriginal Cultural Residency Program
We are fortunate to be able to participate in the Catholic Education SA Aboriginal Cultural Residency Program this year. The program is an opportunity for school communities to engage a resident artist with experience as an Aboriginal Australian and expertise in Art and Culture. Artist, story-teller and educator, Chris Crebbin will be working with our year 2, 3 and 4 students across seven weeks. We look forward to welcoming Chris next week and to working in partnership with him to develop our understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures through Art.
NAPLAN
Next week the year 3 and 5 students participate in NAPLAN. A NAPLAN Online - Information for Parents and Carers brochure is available here: https://nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/resources/naplan-online-information-brochure-for-parents-and-carers.pdf
If your child is participating in this year's NAPLAN, I encourage you to talk to them and reassure them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and remind them to simply do their best.
P&F
Thank you to Elise Campbell-Hand for taking on the role of P&F Chairperson in 2021. Elise has been a strong supporter of our parent committee and we are grateful to her for stepping into this position. Elise also joins the School Board as the P&F representative.
Pupil Free Day
I remind families that Friday 21st May is a Pupil Free Day. Our staff will be participating in an annual Spiritual Formation and Reflection Day.
It was wonderful to have many mums and grandmothers join us for the Early Years Mother's Day liturgy this week and I wish all mums a very happy Mother's Day for Sunday. Thank you for all that you do to love, care for and support the special people in your lives.
Warm regards,
John Low
