Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of St Catherine’s,
It has been a busy week with students engaged in their annual water safety and swimming program at Woodside Pool. All went smoothly (even with a couple of cooler days) and the students did a fantastic job. Many thanks to the parent volunteers who were able to support at the pool throughout the week.
Thank you to the parents and children who were able to join the Family Mass held at St Matthew's Church in Bridgewater last weekend.
Last week 39 year 3-6 students participated in the Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival held at the SA Athletics Stadium in Mile End. The students are to be congratulated for the way they participated in the day, with teachers reporting that they put in their best efforts and demonstrated great team spirit as they supported and cheered on one another.
Last Friday saw our Year 5 and 6 students run their first St Catherine's Market Day as part of the $20 Boss Program they are engaged in this term. The feedback from parents has been extremely positive regarding this program and I know the students have been very appreciative of all of the parent support. My thanks to Mrs Lewis and Mrs Cornelius for the time and effort they have put into coordinating this hands on, authentic learning experience for the students.
Our Year 3/4 students enjoyed a 'sleepover' at school recently and whilst the sleepover coincided with a particularly stormy weather event, the students' spirits weren't dampened. Pizza, garlic bread and a movie made for a comfortable and cosy evening. Thank you to Mrs Kirby and Mrs Fox for coordinating the sleepover and to Mrs Thomson, Mr De Giovanniello and Ms Disotto for offering their support by joining the overnight experience.
Next week our Year 6 students head off on their camp to Kangaroo Island. Mrs Cornelius, Mr De Giovanniello and myself are looking forward to an action packed trip, visiting many of the attractions Kangaroo Island has to offer. I know the students are excited about the trip ahead and the opportunity to enhance their skills in personal responsibility and independence as well as develop their self confidence and growth mindset as they work as a team to experience many exciting activities and create many lasting memories with their friends.
Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher Certification
Supporting our teaching staff to undertake National Certification as a Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher is part of our 2021-2023 Strategic Plan. National Certification is a voluntary process that ensures teachers have access to a rigorous and transparent process that recognises Highly Accomplished and Lead teachers. It enables teachers to receive feedback on their practice and have their practice evaluated by nationally trained assessors who are external to our school. It exposes teachers to communities of practice and supports them to further develop and grow as a professional whilst improving outcomes for students. The certification process consists of two stages - submission of a portfolio of evidence and a site visit and observation by an external assessor. I'd like to congratulate Corey Lewis who has undertaken this assessment process this year and achieved certification as a Lead Teacher.
2022 Class Placements
We are currently in the process of establishing class groupings for next year. This is a complex process which takes into consideration the number of students enrolled in each year level along with other factors such as gender, student sociogram information, academic and social emotional learning needs, siblings/relatives and so on. Our class structure for 2022 will continue with 8 classes in the following groupings: Reception, Reception/Year 1, 2 X Year 1/2 classes, 2 X Year 3/4 classes, Year 5 and Year 6.
There are a number of staffing changes taking place from the start of next year which include the following:
Melinda James has accepted a position at School of the Nativity Catholic School, Aberfoyle Park and so will conclude her time at St Catherine's at the end of this year. Melinda has been part of the St Catherine's School community for 30 years and leaves a legacy of significant support for Inclusion and Wellbeing of students for which we are extremely grateful for.
Alison Edwards, who is on 12 months leave this year, has decided that the time is right to commence retirement and so Alison will officially finish her time at St Catherine's at the end of this year. Alison has also contributed much to the St Catherine's community over her 20 years of work here, across a number of learning areas.
Katie Ashmead has accepted a teaching position at St Paul Lutheran School, Blair Athol starting next year. Katie has worked at St Catherine's since 2007 and this year has worked part-time at the school as well as part-time (independently) as a literacy consultant.
We will take the opportunity to formally acknowledge and farewell Melinda, Alison and Katie at our end of year Mass.
We are in the process of finalising our staffing for 2022 and students will have the opportunity to meet with their 2022 class teacher at our transition morning being held on Monday 6th December.
Tuck shop and Canteen
Thanks to a very dedicated group of parent volunteers our Monday Tuck Shop and Friday Canteen lunch is up and running again. Please remember to only send your child with a small amount of money for them to use at the Monday Tuck Shop. Information regarding the Friday lunch menu is sent to families via Skoolbag each week.
We are extremely grateful to Elise and Jane for coordinating this facility for our students and to the parents who help out with volunteering.
Keep dry and have a great weekend.
Warm regards,
John Low
